Since 1943, the U.S. Navy publication Naval Aviation News has, from time to time, carried great stories, pictures, and art about the Navy’s pioneering first pilots, airplanes, and aircraft carriers. Retired naval aviator Captain B. K. Bryans has compiled them into two books Flying on Fabric I (1911 - 1922) and Flying on Fabric II (1922 - 1940).
Volume II contains sixty-six true stories, including several written by Retired Rear Admiral J.R. Tate, who flew bi-wing fighters off the first aircraft carriers—and had an exciting misadventure with an early parachute. He also tells us about Admiral “Bull” Halsey—the only senior officer of the time to earn Navy wings the hard way by flying the entire syllabus.
The book tells of the first carrier vs. carrier exercises when Saratoga and Lexington were new shiny objects, and the battleship admirals hated them. It also delves briefly into the famous builders of Navy airplanes Curtiss, Vought, Grumman and others.
This is history presented as a set of remarkable, but true, stories of and by the men who learned to fly and fight on fabric-covered wings.

Flying on Fabric II Wooden Decks and Iron Men 19221940 eBook B K Bryans

Flying on Fabric 2 is a seamless continuation of Flying on Fabric 1. I highly recommend buying both books as a set.

In Flying on Fabric 2 retired Naval Aviator Captain B.K. Bryans picks up the story of Naval Aviation where we left off with Flying on Fabric 1 in the early 1920s and takes us into 1940 where World War II had already started in Europe and Asia.
Following the same format as Flying on Fabric 1, Capt. Bryans continues to guide us through stories that chronicle the careers of the first Naval Aviators who literally invented U.S. Naval Aviation and we read how many were destined to become the most famous admirals of World War II.
Many of the first hand stories by these very same men explain their involvement in the birth and evolution of the modern aircraft carrier and it's tactics; and how they and their peers established the first Navy fighter, scout, torpedo, bombing and patrol squadrons. - The same tools that, a few years later, they used to forge a decisive American victory in the Pacific.

I highly recommend this book.
